This is a robot I came up with as an assignment for my Fundamentals of Design Class. The goal of the assignment was to design a humanoid character but have the proportions distorted to create a more interesting character design. This is one of four designs I came up with using rough thumbnails, and is the one I chose to finish the project with. He has a hovering thruster in place of legs and has six arms. Four of them are floating around with anti-gravity units to keep things a little more interesting. Also, the poorly drawn person is supposed to be an average 6-foot tall human, so you can get the scale there. I call him the R.Y.N.O. Post a comment if you think you know why he's called that. Again, more original work rather than fan art that I've done.
Here's the initial design of the R.Y.N.O. along with two other designs I thought up as a part of this project. The fourth one isn't post-worthy to me, so that's why I'm not showing it. More robots with human proportion distorted greatly.
The second part of the assignment differed depending on what major we had. I was Media Arts and Animation, so I had to come up with 4 action poses with the character. These are eight, quick thumbnails for some of the poses I'm going to be doing. Just a quick note; thumbnails are quick thoughts and are not refined images, therefore don't expect to see much detail. These were just used to get ideas and scope out the positions.
And now they're here, the four, finished action poses.
This one here shows off RYNO's speed. Normally his thrusters are more orange or yellow when he's simply hovering or moving at a slower pace. When he really needs a burst of speed, he kicks in the afterburners and rivals a fighter jet in sheer speed. You also get to see the gravity teathers that he uses to control is floating arms, in case anyone was wondering how he did it. This was fairly easy to draw because it's a complete profile view and perspective doesn't mess with you as much in this case.
This second one shows off some of his fighting capabilities. Whenever someone has floating arms, you know they have some sort of Rocket Punch. RYNO has four, but here I depict him throwing two rocket punches for a more interesting pose. This one was a little harder since I had to use one-point perspective, but one-point isn't too difficult, it just requires you to think a bit more. The main trick was making it seem like the two fists really did rocket away from RYNO's shoulder.
Showing off more of his fighting abilities, this is RYNO's Gattling Fist. He has six arms, so it makes sense that he can throw a lot of punches in rapid succession. Now, I was inspired by a fighting move that Monkey D. Luffy (The main character from an anime called One Piece, in case you didn't know) has, called the Gum-Gum Gatling Gun. I wanted to see if I could bring it to this character, so I gave it a shot. The tricky part here was drawing all those fists. Hands are hard enough as is, but when you draw ten of them in two-point perspective... It becomes a bit tedious. Still, I'm happy with the end result.
Lastly, RYNO is a robot, and what's a giant robot without an overpowered arsenal of ridiculous weapons? Now the first thing you may notice is that his floating arms are gone. That's because he combines the four of them with his left arm to make that monster cannon. RYNO already has a whole array of weapons without having to do flashy, anime style, utimately nerdy power-ups. Still, having a BFG is always fun. Anywho, the main challenge with this one was the angle I decided to draw him from. This type of angle generally demands three-point perspective, and that gets tedious for simple forms, like a cube, a sphere, a cylinder or a cone. Drawing a robot in that manner is not much easier. Still, I enjoyed the challenge and thought it turned out very well for what I was going for. The only gripe that I really have is that I didn't exaggerate the charging cannon, enough.
And that is all for this project. Don't think this is the last you'll see of RYNO, though. I've got big plans for him, assuming I can accomplish them... Let's just say he's not a heartless killing machine, but rather a much more likeable person on the inside. Literally.
